Good morning readers. I hope you had a good night’s rest and not just to feel great. Studies show that the concept of beauty sleep is not all myth and has basis in reality. A study performed by John Axelsson of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden looked at this very thing.
Much has been written about Botox and its benefits for reduction in the appearance of lines on the face such as those pesky frown lines between the eyes. Recently there has been more and more use of Botox to help chronic migraine sufferers. While there is no doubt about the benefit cosmetically, what does Botox actually do for our headaches?
Whether you are headed for a tropical vacation in the strong Caribbean
Hi everyone! My name is Christal Higgins and I am the practice manager at Baskin Aesthetic Medicine and I love SkinMedica products. I had heard the phrase, at one of our SkinMedica educational trainings, “we don’t have to age like our parents or grandparents.” Now, I think my parents look great, but look around and you can tell that people, in general, don’t take care of their skin. All the sun and fun throughout the years catches up with us and you can see it. My go to product is SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum, a potent combination of growth factors that stimulates collagen and your own growth factors to keep your skin firmer, tighter and glowing. It works. My other must have product is Retinol at night. Without it, you are losing the fight against aging. Retinol stimulates collagen and helps your skin repair itself, exfoliating dead skin skin cells and bringing healthy new ones to the surface. Retinol has been one of the #1 age fighters for years because it works. It takes just a few steps in the morning and at night. Your skin will thank you tomorrow and in ten years! (Don’t forget sunscreen 365 days a year!)
Dermal filler injections have literally changed the face of aging and have given doctors the ability to reverse the visible signs of time instantly. There’s also been a paradigm shift of sorts in the world of facial aesthetics. It’s no longer enough to just take loose skin and pull it tight. The “old” way of simply using fillers to erase wrinkles and folds is really just a two-dimensional approach to a 3 dimensional problem.
As we get older, we start to lose elasticity and fullness in our faces, which leads to cheek “hollowing” and loss of youthful plumpness. Full cheeks are a key marker of youth. Age-related volume loss can cause the face to lose definition, balance and change shape, all of which can make a person appear older than their years.
People age differently: their skin may deflate (lose fullness or volume), descend (droop or sag) or both. However, few people realize the mid-face is one of the first areas to show the signs of aging – as we lose facial volume, cheeks deflate and descend.
Show Off Those Legs!
If you sometimes avoid showing your legs because you have spider veins — those small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves and ankles — you are not alone. It’s estimated that at least half of all women are bothered by this common cosmetic problem.
A number of factors such as aging, heredity, hormonal changes, and injury can contribute to spider veins. Although the veins aren’t harmful, they can be bothersome and aren’t necessary for normal circulation. With sclerotherapy vein treatment you can lessen the look of spider veins and improve the appearance of your skin.
What exactly is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a technique that has been around for decades to treat spider veins and some smaller varicose veins. At our Baskin Aesthetic Medicine, this procedure involves injecting a sclerosing solution directly into the small veins. As the solution comes into contact with the blood vessel, it irritates the blood vessel and causes it to seal off so that blood can no longer pass through the vein. After several weeks, many of the treated vessels will visibly disappear.
How many treatments will you need?
The number of treatments needed to clear or improve varicose veins differs for each person, but typically, the average number of treatments is four.
How long will it take to recover from Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive, gentle procedure with virtually no down time. Most people are able to return to work and resume most activities immediately following treatment. You will be asked to wear compression hose for several days following the procedure. The compression hose help protect again blood clots and speed the healing process.
In the days following treatment, veins may actually appear darker and more prominent than they did before the injection. This is completely normal and part of the healing process. As your body continues to heal, the veins will begin to lighten. Generally two or more sessions, at least one month apart, are needed to achieve the desired results.
If you have questions or would like more detailed information about how this procedure may benefit you, don’t hesitate to call our office at 780-0045 to schedule a Complimentary Consultation.
Each year, Skin Cancer Awareness Month shines an important spotlight on skin cancer, the most common form of cancer in the United States with over one million people diagnosed each year.
This summer, be sun-smart with these tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation.
- Avoid burning and stay clear of the sun during its prime hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; seek shade instead.
- Cover up with protective clothing and use at least one ounce (that’s two tablespoons) of broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen for your face and body, making sure to reapply after sweating or swimming.
- Use SPF 15 for everyday and SPF 30 or higher for outdoor activities.
- Perform monthly skin checks and visit your doctor annually for a professional exam.
- Lastly, skip tanning beds altogether: Just four visits a year can increase your risk of melanoma by 11 percent.
We love using SkinMedica Daily Physical Defense products. They’re oil-free and provide the ultimate protection from those nasty UVA and UVB rays. The fragrance free formula also helps protect skin from free radical damage. Sensitive skin types benefit from the 100% mineral formulation that is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. All of their sunscreens are sheer enough to be worn under makeup. And, it’s recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
We never leave home without it!
More and more people are trying Coolsculpting these days and we’re loving the results we’re seeing! This is a picture of a 63 year old woman a year after 3 treatments of Coolsculpting. This woman was by no means overweight, she was active, ate well and exercised. But, like a lot of people, she had an area of stubborn fat that just wouldn’t go away no matter what she did. She was a perfect candidate for Coolsculpting. Needless to say, she was pretty happy with the results. So were we.
CBS just did a segment on Coolsculpting that’s pretty interesting. If you have a minute and are interested in learning more about fat freezing, check out the article on their website or watch the video below.
