A Products For Estrogen-deficient Skin

Finally, products that improve the look of estrogen-deficient skin!  The newest addition to our skincare shop is here and we are excited.  Emepelle serum and night cream feature breakthrough MEP technology that mimics what estrogen does for our skin.  Best used for perimenopausal and post-menopausal skin concerns.  We couldn’t wait to get our hands on it!

Did you know? Low estrogen accelerates skin aging during perimenopause and menopause

As women age, estrogen levels throughout the body naturally decline. This decrease in estrogen leads to Estrogen Deficient Skin, which accelerates collagen loss and visible signs of skin.

What is MEP?

MEP helps address collagen loss and restore the natural function of Estrogen Deficient Skin, common at perimenopause and menopause. This innovative ingredient provides benefits exclusively for the skin. MEP is clinically proven to safely and effectively help improve dryness, dullness, laxity, atrophy, and the appearance of fine lines for more healthy, youthful-looking skin.

Common Questions About Botox

Botox Portland

Is Botox Safe?

Botox is currently the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure in the United States for a reason – it’s extremely safe and it works! FDA approved, Botox is backed by over 15 years of clinical studies and is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind.

Does Botox Prevent Wrinkles?

Absolutely. Botox injections will slow muscles that contract hundreds of times a day, that would otherwise eventually etch lines in the skin. If Botox is started before the lines become etched in you will be preventing the wear that causes the lines to form in the first place.

Will Botox Make Me Feel Numb and Look Frozen?

It will not affect the nerves that cause sensation, or make you feel numb. Using Botox moderately and properly (administered by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy) won’t cause a “frozen face”. At Baskin Aesthetic, we would rather err on the conservative side and have you come back for a touch up, than use too much and not have a good result. So basically, you’ll look like yourself—only with less noticeable lines. No one should be able to tell you’ve had anything done.We prefer a more natural look, meaning you’ll still have movement and expression in your face.

What Can I Expect the Day After My Botox Appointment?

Not much. Results begin to show in a couple of days and develop gradually over the course of two weeks. We tell anyone preparing for a big event to come in two weeks ahead of time.

How much time does treatment take?

The injection process takes a quick 10 minutes! What are you waiting for?

The Botox timeline: What to expect following your treatment

When Botox is administered correctly it can offer a relaxed, refreshed and more youthful appearance.  It can help to enhance your features while also preventing those pesky lines and wrinkles developing for years to come.

It’s understandable that you might have some questions and reservations about the treatment – it does involve facial injections after all! To put your mind at ease, we’ve outlined what you can expect before, during and after the treatment:

At the consultation

During the initial consultation, Dr Baskin or one of our Registered Nurses will discuss with you exactly what your concerns are and manage your expectations to ensure you get the best result. They will make treatment recommendations to align with what you want to achieve and your budget. Now’s the time to ask any questions you have, to ensure you have a full understanding of the treatment.

At the Botox® appointment

At your first Botox® appointment*, you’ll complete a medical consent form and pre-treatment photos are taken to track your results. This initial appointment is about 30 minutes, which is longer than follow up appointments which are only around 15 minutes. Your nurse will then talk you through the procedure before starting. Botox® is injected directly into the targeted muscle using a fine needle. Most people describe the treatment as ‘slightly uncomfortable’ but it is over in no time!

*Unless you are under a doctor order for it,  seven days prior to a Botox injection avoid Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, any anti-inflammatory medications, Fish Oil/Flaxseed Oil supplements and Melatonin.  This will decrease your chance of bruising.

Immediately after the treatment

Right after the treatment, you may have a small amount of redness and swelling – this will usually resolve within ten minutes. Most people experience no pain or side effects, a small number get a mild headache after the treatment which can be eased with mild pain relief. You will be given post-treatment information which outlines all of the details and post-care advice.

1 day after the treatment

Most people will not experience any symptoms that show they’ve had the treatment done, however it is possible to have some minor bruising. Noticeable results are not usually visible the next day, as it take a bit of time for the Botox® to kick in.

1 week after the treatment

After five to seven days, you are likely to start to see results of your treatment, with the full effect seen at 10-14 days. The treated area will appear smoother and look more refreshed.

1 month after the treatment

A month down the track, your Botox® will still be very effective.  Some people will have a very small amount of movement return, although this differs for everyone and also depends on the area treated.

3 months after the treatment

After about 3 to 6 months, the effects of Botox start to wear off and you will start to see a gradual return of movement. If you want the fresh and smooth look to return, you will have to repeat the injections. Most people get injections every 3 to 4 months.

PRP Microneedling

What is Microneedling?
Microneedling uses a sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. This initiates the skin’s repair process to naturally produce collagen and elastin, ideal for smoothing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks. Micro-channels created by the treatment allow for optimal absorption of topical products and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), enhancing their effects in the deeper layers of skin.

What does it feel like?
Micro-Needling feels similar to sandpaper being moved across the skin. Topical numbing may be applied prior to your procedure, but no anesthesia or medications are necessary.

What can I expect after a Micro-Needling procedure?
The skin will be red and flushed, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn, for 12 hours to 3 days.* You may also experience mild swelling, tightness, and/or mild peeling. Side effects are temporary and typically resolve within 3 days. Total healing time depends on the depth of the treatment, skin type, and skin condition, and some patients may heal completely in 24 hours.

When will I see the results?
Patients typically notice an immediate glow, but visible improvement will take about 2-4 weeks and can continue for up to 6 months.*

How many treatments will I need?
A series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is ideal for optimal results. Some conditions like deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, and acne scars may need 6-8 treatments.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy. What is PRP?
Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets in the blood that are crucial to wound healing. When used for skin rejuvenation, PRP releases growth factors into the skin to expedite the body’s own repair process and stimulate new collagen and elastin.

What does the procedure entail?
A small blood sample is taken from your own body and the PRP is separated from the other components. The PRP is then topically applied to the skin immediately following a micro-needling procedure. The micro-channels created by micro-needling provide direct pathways to the deeper layers of skin for optimal wound healing. Micro-needling with PRP application is an ideal treatment for smoothing fine lines, wrinkles, or even increasing plumpness and overall rejuvenation of the skin.

Dr Baskin injects KYBELLA™

Now you can take care of that double chin!

KYBELLA Patient Before and After (Side View)

Did you know that according to a 2014 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, nearly as many consumers are bothered by their double chin (68%) as by lines and wrinkles around the eyes (71%)? In fact, the condition, which can make you look older and heavier, even has a name. It’s called submental fullness, and it can be difficult to get rid of on your own. Because submental fullness can be influenced by multiple factors, like aging and genetics, sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, your double chin may not go away.

Here’s the good news: our office is now offering KYBELLA™ (deoxycholic acid) injection, the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness. When injected into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA™ causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

How KYBELLA™ Works
KYBELLA™ is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected  into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA™ causes the destruction of fat cells.  Once destroyed, those cells can not store or accumulate fat.

How Long Before Seeing Results
With this nonsurgical treatment, many patients experience visible results in two to four treatment sessions spaced at least one month apart. Up to six treatments may be administered. Treatment with KYBELLA™ is customized by Dr Baskin to the patient’s aesthetic goals for an improved chin profile. Each in-office treatment session is typically 15-20 minutes.  KYBELLA™ treatments typically have high patient satisfaction. 79% of patients treated with KYBELLA™ reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and chin.Side Effects

The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and formation of areas of hardness in the treatment area. In clinical trials, the incidence and severity of most side effects decreased with subsequent KYBELLA™ treatments. KYBELLA™ has been the focus of a global clinical development program involving over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide, of which 1,600 have been treated with KYBELLA™.

The Effects of Long-Term Botox Use

Many people think that Botox is only good for a quick fix, especially since the effects are temporary. However, long-term Botox use can actually make your wrinkles look permanently better by preventing them from getting worse in the long run.

Think about it this way: people make facial expressions every single day, whether it’s expressing an emotion (i.e. smiling) or simply out of habit (i.e. raising your brows). Making facial expressions causes temporary dynamic lines to show up in your face. These lines go away when your face returns to rest. However, as you continue to make facial expressions, day after day and year after year, and as your skin ages, these lines start to get etched in your skin. That’s when frown lines get progressively deeper for people who frown all the time. Or when crow’s feet stay put even after you stop smiling or squinting. Eventually, what once were dynamic wrinkles become wrinkles that are just there, even when you don’t make any facial expressions.

This is where Botox comes into play. When you get consistent Botox injections, you prevent potential wrinkle formations from getting deeper or worse. Botox limits the range of facial muscle movement (when done skillfully, your face will not get that frozen look) so that wrinkles don’t worsen over time. If you have a bad habit of frowning or lifting your brows for no reason, consistent Botox injections can also help your face kick these bad habits and therefore prevent any potential lines from getting etched in your skin. Getting frequent Botox injections may also help relax your facial muscles so that you don’t need as a high a dose or as frequent as an injection to maintain your results.

Bottom line: You don’t need to use Botox all the time, but long-term and consistent Botox use helps a lot.

Now’s The Time To Get Your Legs Ready For Summer!

spider.veisn
Although it’s hard to believe with two feet of fresh snow on the ground, but spring really is around the corner! And NOW is a good time to think about removing those irritating little things that look like a purple or blue road map on your legs – spider veins.

Spider veins can plague anyone, old or young, male or female. Luckily, there’s a simple procedure that can take care of them . Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a treatment solution into the leg veins with very fine needles. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and gradually fade from view.

Typically 4-6 treatments are needed, spaced 1 month apart. Treatments take 30-45 minutes with most patients reporting only minimal discomfort with no topical numbing necessary. You can be in and out during your lunch hour!

Preventing Spider Veins
Although genes and hormones can contribute to varicose and spider veins, simple lifestyle changes can help prevent new unsightly veins from appearing and keep existing ones from getting worse.

Exercise
Poor circulation, which can cause spider and varicose veins, is often the result of being sedentary. So get up and move around! Find an exercise routine you enjoy and stick to it. Swimming is great as it promotes circulation while taking pressure off your legs.

And, at the very least, if you’re stuck at a desk all day (or in a car/on a plane), get up and walk around for five minutes every hour or so.

Working out not only helps promote circulation, it will also help you maintain a healthy weight, which will also reduce your chances of developing varicose and spider veins.

Take Breaks from Standing
Just as you want to avoid sitting for long periods of time, try to avoid standing for long periods as well. If you don’t have that luxury, though, and have to be on your feet all day, make sure you’re wearing supportive shoes, take breaks to sit down, and prop your feet up when you can (to facilitate circulation). This will not only help take the pressure off your legs, but your joints and back will thank you.
